The States' right coast is synonymous with frigid tubes. Ones that can pack a punch and require a certain level of navigational expertise to squeeze out of that clamping, almond end section. But it's also the reason why those cylindrical drainers have helped nurtured some of the finest keg hounds on the planet. See Brett Barley, for instance.

Throughout January, the likes of New Jersey lit up, the shoreline set ablaze with a few back-to-back swells. The most recent rifled in just last week towards the end of Jan and was dubbed 'The Rainbow Swell' – you can see why.

Over the past few weeks, lensmen Timmy Torchia and Shawn Casey have been on the chase, hunting down each swell as it rumbled into sand

“During January we chased it around, finding some special windows of opportunity, and missed a few with the swell pulsing during the overnight hours,” relays Timmy.

“The last swell of the month, [the aforementioned Rainbow Swell] began to build on Wednesday overnight into Thursday. The only question was, would the wind swing west before sunset?

“I received a phone call around 3pm that day with the news that they had but I knew the light would be fading, the front was still passing and it was still raining. I made my way to the beach, it stopped raining, the sky was getting brighter and this rainbow was so vivid. Until the sunset that evening the tones in the sky mother nature treated us to was amazing.

“The swell was maxing and the sun had set. The following day, Friday the swell was still in place and lasted all day. When it's all said and done though, it was a fun month here in New Jersey and we'll be here waiting for a big south swell with snowy conditions.”
