The Elands Hoax

MISCHIEVOUS Elands Bay surfers erected a sign on the well known break banning alternative wave craft, it worked, for a while.

The sign which prohibited stand up paddling, windsurfing and kite surfing was presumably intended to make a point, not actually prove effective. Amusingly the local police force were so taken in by the quality of the sign they initially enforced the ban, chasing away anyone trying to surf their on the ‘prohibited’ craft.

Photographer, Alan van Gysen, who snapped this shot said. “The surfer’s involved certainly went all out, spending money on a quality sign worded exactly like an official sign. But a hoax non-the-less and authorities have taken it down, but not before confused policeman from the local community in Elands Bay chased numerous windsurfers and SUPers away.”

Gary van Rooyen, director of Coreban Stand-Up Paddle Boards, which is located close to the beach, told the local press that the sign went up two weeks ago.

He said “It stipulated, in terms of the National Parks, Beaches and Recreation Act, the use of certain craft at the beach was prohibited due to the dangers they posed to other ocean users.

“This is a bitter pill to swallow for the paddle boarders and surfers who are disciplined,” adding that there was a problem with European kite surfers who lacked discipline.

“Most of these guys go at an average of 40-50 km an hour and if they hit someone going at that speed, that person will surely be injured.”

Kite surfers are certainly not banned from the break and according to The Cederberg Municipality mayor, Jonas White, they have divine approval. “Kite surfing is a blessing from the Almighty,” he said to the Cape Times.
