INTRODUCING the new Southbound series from Mikey Corker, a surfing journey from Europe’s chilliest Norwegian tip to its sun-baked Spanish bottom.
Kicking-off in Norway, a land of extremes, and usually imagined covered in a blanket of snow we now see it during the almost perpetual light of summer. At this time of year great waves surfed after midnight in a majestic setting are the norm.
From a film-making point of view where we are always looking for that low-lying rich golden light that is in abundance this time of year.Mikey Corker
“Norway in the summer is a complete trip.” Mikey said “In actual fact when I arrived and realised that the snow at the coast was mostly melted and I would not get the classic snowy backdrops I had in mind, I was a bit bummed. Soon this disappointment was overshadowed by sheer amazement at the unreal light that the summer months offer, especially up in the Arctic where we were lucky enough to be there for the first week of the true all-night sun. Once we had adjusted to the later starting days it was amazing to be able to experience this, especially from a film-making point of view where we are always looking for that low-lying rich golden light that is in abundance this time of year.”
“The scenery left me in paralysed awe on a day-to-day basis, and I really hope some of the opening landscape shots can transmit this. Most of the surfing was shot after 12pm at night, and I would recommend to any surfer who is searching a unique experience to make their way up to Norway to experience this for themselves.”
Athletes: Seamus Fox and Andrew Lange (a South African wandering surf gypsy. He keep us entertained with some smooth lines and some soulful tunes all played out in the shadow of the incredible northern peaks.)
